چکیده

The forces experienced while surgically cutting anatomical tissues from a sheep and two rats were investigated for three scissor types. Data were collected in situ using instrumented Mayo, Metzenbaum, and Iris scissors immediately after death to minimize post-mortem effects. The force-position relationship, the frequency components present in the signal, the significance of the cutting rate, as well as other invariant properties, were investigated after segmentation of the data into distinct task phases. Measurements were found to be independent of the cutting speed for Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors, but the results for Iris scissors were inconclusive. Sensitivity to cutting tissues longitudinally or transversely depended on both the tissue and on the scissor type. Data from cutting three tissues (rat skin, liver and tendon) with Metzenbaum scissors as well as blank runs were processed and displayed as haptic recordings through a custom designed haptic interface. Experiments demonstrated that human subjects could identify tissues with similar accuracy when performing a real or simulated cutting task. The use of haptic recordings to generate the simulations was simple and efficient, however, it lacked flexibility because only the information obtained during data acquisition could be displayed. Future experiments should account for the user grip, tissue thickness, tissue moisture content, hand orientation, and innate scissor dynamics. A database of the collected signals has been created on the Internet for public use at http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/∼haptic/tissue/data.html).

On the Display of Haptic Recordings for Cutting Biological Tissues

Current simulations of surgical procedures do not provide haptic feedback of cutting forces felt while using surgical scissors. We have designed and tested “haptic scissors,” an interface that can display forces to a user grasping Metzenbaum scissor handles. By filtering and scaling cutting data obtained in previous work, we have created haptic virtual environments that can simulate the cutting...

Haptic rendering of tissue cutting with scissors.

Current surgical simulations that involve cutting with scissors lack display of forces "between the fingers" of the operator. The objective of this work is to develop a fast, realistic haptic rendering technique for scissor cutting that can be easily integrated into soft tissue models commonly used in surgical simulators. A virtual environment was created for combined graphic and haptic display...

Hybrid Surgery Cutting using Snapping Algorithm, Volume Deformation and Haptic Interaction

In this paper, we propose algorithms to generate realistic cut simulations on hybrid deformable anatomy objects consisting of volumetric data and iso-surfaces. A 3-dimensional node snapping algorithm is presented to modify the surface topology of the objects, without adding new elements. Smooth cut is generated by duplicating and displacing mass points that have been snapped along the cutting p...

A Robust Controller with Online Authority Transformation for Dual User Haptic Training System

In this study, a force reflection control structure is developed for the surgery training haptic system. In the surgery training haptic system, the surgical operation is cooperatively performed by a trainer and a trainee. The participation of each surgeon in the operation is established through their own haptic consoles. Although the operation is primarily performed by the trainee, the trainer ...
